    Deadlines for certain states to apply for the FAFSA

    1. Eligibility For Federal Student Aid

    Eligibility for federal student aid programs is based on financial need and several other factors. Your eligibility is determined by the information you provide on the FAFSA.

    Basic eligibility requirements:
    • Demonstrate financial need (except for certain loans).
    • Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen with a valid Social Security Number.
    • Be working toward a degree or certificate in an eligible program.
    • Show, by one of the following means, that you’re qualified to obtain a postsecondary education:
      • Have a high school diploma or a General Education Development (GED) Certificate.
      • Pass an approved ability-to-benefit (ATB) test (if you don’t have a diploma or GED, a school can administer a test to determine whether you can benefit from the education offered at that school).
      • Meet other standards your state establishes that we have approved.
      • Complete a high school education in a home school setting approved under state law.
    • Register (if you haven’t already) with the Selective Service if you’re a male between the ages of 18 and 25.
      • Maintain satisfactory academic progress once in school

    2. How To Apply for Financial Aid

    A. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)

    To apply for student financial aid from the federal government and to be considered for need-based financial aid from most other sources, it is important to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

    Before completing the FAFSA online, you will need a Personal Identification Number (PIN). Your PIN allows you to access your FAFSA online and serves as your electronic signature. If you are a dependent student, both student and parent will need a PIN to electronically sign the FAFSA. Click here to apply for PIN numbers.

    The federal school code for Mount Vernon Nazarene University is 007085. This code authorizes MVNU to receive your FAFSA information.

    If you are planning on entering a college in the fall, the FAFSA may be completed any time after January 1 of that same year. Because the funds for some financial aid programs may be limited, you should apply as early as possible. The priority deadline at MVNU is March 15. Having your income taxes finished prior to completing the FAFSA helps you to be able to complete the form easily and accurately. However, if there are circumstances that prohibit you from filing your taxes by the priority date, you can estimate by selecting the appropriate “will file” box on the FAFSA. At the point you actually complete your taxes, you can then go back online to adjust your estimates to actual.

    B. MVNU Financial Aid Application

    In addition to filing the FAFSA, MVNU requires an additional application from its students. The MVNU Financial Aid Application determines eligibility for many types of institutional aid. First-time freshmen, transfers, and re-accepted students complete this application along with their admission materials. Returning students can complete this process online by clicking on the link above.

    C. MVNU Award Letter

    Once all application materials are collected, students receive an award letter informing them of their scholarship, grant and loan eligibility. First-time freshmen, transfers, and re-accepted students will receive two hard copies of their award letter. These students must return one copy of their award letter to the Financial Aid Office, noting the aid they wish to accept, reject, or revise.

    3. Unusual Circumstances

    There are occasions when the data collected on the FAFSA does not accurately represent a family’s ability to contribute to a student’s education. Drastic reductions to income, unusually high medical bills, or a parent ‘s college tuition are examples of situations that could cause the FAFSA results to not be an accurate indication of the family’s current financial condition. In cases like these, you are able to make an appeal for us to more carefully and completely examine your situation.
